Yes, that looks a bit like I’m knitting a placenta. 😉
But it is the beginning of a new helmet liner.
Last winter I made one for each of the boys…there are photos around here somewhere…. this one, though, is wool (the boys preferred caron simply soft for less-itchy-wear) and is being knit up for a Marine.
There are many patterns, mine is from the book Knit on Down…one of my favorite pattern books.
But if one would want to knit a liner there a patterns available online. Here are a few links…if these don’t serve your needs, just do a search on ‘helmet liner knitting pattern’:
The other helmet liner I made for a Marine was also made from Fisherman’s Wool — it is a simple, straightforward, utilitarian and inexpensive yarn. And most importantly, it is 100% wool…which is a must for military use.
Don’t have a member of the military to knit for? Both the above links provide addresses to mail your completed liner. From there it will be sent on to a troop in need.
